I have a 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer OZ Rally and i have recently encountered a maintenance issue. My car died while my dad was driving it on the freeway. Prior to the trip i noticed noises coming from the pulley system (like it was having a hard time rotating) but i disregarded it because it was running fine the morning before the trip.

    Hello everyone,

I have a 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer OZ Rally and i have recently encountered a maintenance issue. My car died while my dad was driving it on the freeway. Prior to the trip i noticed noises coming from the pulley system (like it was having a hard time rotating) but i disregarded it because it was running fine the morning before the trip.
I tried diagnosing the problem and it seems to me that it might be a worn off bearing from the water pump. I came to this conclusion because when i exposed the timing belt and tried to start the car, all the other pulleys(serpentine, alternator belts) would rotate but not the timing belt. It is as if that one of the gears containing the timing belt is stuck and is preventing the system from rotating. I take care of my engine, changing oil every 3-4 thousand miles. Also when i got the car i got a new serpentine belt and alternator belt. I do hear squeaking noise when the car is running so I'm assuming that it is the water pump bearing.

Please let me know if my diagnose is correct, but i do plan on removing the timing belt and trying to rotate all the gears(crank shaft, cam shaft, water pump) connecting the timing belt to see if it is the water pump.

Can a worn off bearing on the water pump actually stop a belt system from spinning or is it the timing it self? Please let me know your opinions on this.
Thank you for taking your time reading my post
