  • Zack started by purchasing some band clamps and separating the OEM mufflers from the factory exhaust (an often maligned design change of the S550) allowing him to keep the OEM mufflers and have the option of reverting back to stock while experimenting with different exhaust setups. After the Dynomax Race Bullet muffler installation, some quick welding work and test run, it was on to reducing the significant drone he experienced at 2,000RPM (70-75mph).

  • Inside the new system is a DynoMax Race Bullet muffler, an addition to the tailpipe routing within the system, which responds as a resonator in this application. The system also includes 2.5-inch mandrel bent piping for increased flow and is constructed from stainless steel to protect against corrosion. Like all DynoMax exhaust kits, the JK system includes other necessary hardware and instructions for an easy, bolt-on installation.

Re: Just how loud are Dynomax bullets, really?

I try to be respectful to my neighbors, usually done running or driving around in it before 10pm. During the day though, look out hehe Friend of mine who owns a biz says every time I go past his shop stuff rattles around.

Ironically I have Dynomax bullets on my truck...But the exhaust is super long, still has cats in place with an X-pipe and full length tailpipes with resonated tips to cut down on the card-in-spokes type sound. It has an awesome growl to it and none of the crackle and popping. I have people follow me and ask me what kind of mufflers I have all the time. They are always surprised when I tell them I have soem $40 Dynomax race bullets...And compared to their $150 magnaflows they are just amazed at the sound.

Topping it off is a Straub/Foxwell-ported Edelbrock Super Victor intake and an AED 1,050-cfm Dominator carburetor and a simple MSD 6 ignition. The exhaust relies on a set of Dan Lemon’s 2 1/4-inch primaries stepped to 2 3/8-inch using a 4-inch collector. The rest of the exhaust consists of 3 1/2-inch mandrel-bent tubing and a pair of DynoMax bullet mufflers. The entire engine was machined, balanced, and assembled by Chris Calkins, whom according to Troy “did an amazing job for me.”
