  • Before buyers shop for a new fuel pump relay for their car, they may want to familiarize themselves with its function and location in their car. Fuel pump relays are briefly activated when the car is first turned on, and then again when the car is turned off. They serve to control the amount of current delivered to the fuel pump when it is started up and shut down. Without one, the fuel pump wiring could be overloaded, causing irreparable damage to the fuel pump. Since the latter is costly, car owners need to replace a bad fuel pump relay as soon as possible. Top brands include ACDelco, Airtex, Beck/Arnley, IMC, and more. If buyers do some initial research and take advantage of the great deals on eBay, they should be able to find a new fuel pump relay that keeps their car running well.

Use a digital volt meter, hook up the positive wire to the battery and the ground wire to the fuel pump relay ground wire, turn on key you should get a voltage for a few seconds then it will go away, if you don' t get a voltage reading then there is either a broken wire from the ECM to the relay or the ECM has lost the fuel pump relay driver inside the ECM.

Test II (jump 30/87a): pump runs.

Is this correct? You have also installed a new fuel pump relay, correct?

Try one more test, if you will (you may need an assistant.) Listen closely to the pump relay as someone turns on the ignition. Do you hear (feel) the relay "click?"

With the ignition still on, have your helper gently lift the air flow plunger, does the relay "click" again?

What I suspect is something is causing a permanent ground to terminal (socket) 85 of the relay. It's the one thing you haven't tested directly. From your results following Tony's procedures, we know you have a ground at 85, but you need to test to see if the ground "breaks" when the plunger is lifted.

Try this, using a simple trouble light. With relay removed, you should get a ground at 85 (light goes on.) Now, have someone gently lift the plunger as you watch the light. As soon as the plunger moves up off its rest, the light should go out (ground broken.) I suspect it doesn't but only your test can confirm.

If true, it could be the AFS itself, or the wire connecting to the relay. Unplug the wire from the AFS and see if the light goes out (lose your ground.) If so, the problem is the sensor switch. If the ground remains, something is grounding the wire.

Please report back your results of the above, simple checks.

There is one easy way to test the fuel pump relay. This simple check requires no automotive expertise. If car owners are having difficulty starting their car and suspect a fuel pump issue could be the problem, insert the key into the and turn it on. Next, go around to the side of the car where the gas tank is and listen for a faint buzzing or humming sound. If there is complete silence, the fuel pump relay or the fuel pump itself may be bad and need to be checked at a local auto repair shop.
