Along with power bulges that advertise all the ponies underneath, another common feature on custom hoods are scoops that can help create more horsepower. Channeling cold air to your engine’s intake tract is a proven way to make more power and hood scoops provide the entry way. Colder air is denser and contains more oxygen for better combustion, which results in increased horsepower. Some scoops are positioned so they can increase the speed of the air entering the engine, for a “ram air” effect, but such benefits are only attainable at high vehicle speeds.
